A long weekend for friends

“The finest kind of friendship is between people who expect a great deal of each other but never ask it.” Sylvia Bremer

Cosmo-Manille based businessman NESTOR FLORES hosted an intimate gathering of friends, good food and fun conversation at the lobby of Smallvile 21 Hotel at the swinging Smallville, Metro-Iloilo’s premiere party place for all seasons and reasons!

The get-together became more enjoyable when we were joined by PBA legends KENNETH DUREMDES and ZALDY REALUBIT, LINO ONG of Senate Defenders Team, local collegiate cagers JM MALLARI and JAY-R TANALEON, and Mayor RUDY DISTURA of Dumangas, Iloilo!

Après, yours truly rushed to nearby JLK Bar and Music Lounge to join some designing friends who were celebrating a successful conclusion of a transaction for an upcoming event. In between sips and spills of beveragic delights, we grooved to 70s, 80s and 90s music.

The following day, GMA Regional TV executive DADO TAN and yours truly savored the Father’s Day Lunch Buffet at Azalea Hall of Amigo Terrace Hotel. Gloria Maris Iloilo prepared a sumptuous array of soups, dimsum, main entrée, rice and desserts!

As we took pleasure on the gastronomic treats, we were serenaded by JOEL PATANAO with standards, jazz and ballads for added ambience.

Then indulged ourselves to calorific Death by Chocolate and espresso at Sweet Treats to cap our weekend!

Let’s go tracking and let our technology worry for you!

GPS receivers come in a variety of formats, from devices integrated into cars, phones, and watches, to dedicated devices such as cellphones, computers and Ipads.

Portability, availability, Global Coverage notifications in your hands, real time monitoring, and safety with99.9% server up time is the name of the game of Satellite GPS Tracking and Asset Management System Corporation as it will launch SafeSat today.

SafeSat is a tracking application system that will surely address increasing accidents and injuries.

What is GPS?

GPS or Global Positioning System is a space-based satellite navigation system that provides location and time information in all weather conditions, anywhere on or near the earth where there is an unobstructed line of sight to four or more GPS satellites. The system provides critical capabilities to military, civil and commercial users around the world. It is freely accessible to anyone with a GPS receiver.

Advances in technology and new demands on the existing system have now led to efforts to modernize the GPS system and implement the next generation of GPS III satellites and Next Generation Operational Control System (OCX). In addition to GPS, other systems are in use or under development.

This technology will be introduced in Iloilo City by Satellite GPS Tracking and Asset Management System Corporation. Its device, called SafeSat, will launch tomorrow at Hotel del Rio.

Fuel efficient and cost effective: Idling

Fact: “Anything over 10 seconds of idling uses more fuel than shutting off and restarting your vehicle. The money you save by not idling will more than offset any costs for wear-and-tear on your vehicle. Every 10 minutes of idling consumes up to 400 ml of fuel depending on your type of vehicle.” Idling is one of the largest wastes of fuel drivers and all of that waste is taking us nowhere. Idling is something we don’t often think about – it’s a habit that we do unconsciously. Reducing our idling not only saves us money, but reduces significantly greenhouse gas emissions (CO2) and health-harming pollution. If motorists reduced their idling by just 3 minutes a day, it would be the equivalent to taking 320,000 vehicles off the road for the entire year! Here are some questions one needs to consider when idling:

  1. dropping off or picking up kids in school?
  2. waiting at a drive-thru?
  3. waiting in line at the gas station or car wash?
  4. running short errands?
  5. cooling up car in hot weather?
  6. stopped at railway crossings?
  7. stopped at construction zones?
  8. stopped at red lights?

SafeSat of Satellite GPS Tracking and Asset Management System Corporation is your answer!

Au Palomar celebrates

Happiness is the absence of striving for happiness.” – Chuang Tzu

Fun-to-be-with and vivacious AURORA “Au” PALOMAR turned a year more charming and she celebrate it with a simple bash at her daughter KRISTINE PALOMAR-QUERUBIN’s residence in Chicago, Illinois, USA! She is there for an extended vacation and shopping spree.

Her hardworking daughter KAREN PALOMAR, a Board Member of Capiz, jetted in for the occasion.

The late afternoon to late evening party was attended by relatives and friends who motored from nearby suburbs.

Rightfully so, it was a night to celebrate happiness, togetherness and love with lots of laughs and interesting conversation!

To Tita Au, as she is fondly called, cheers, best wishes and God bless! See you soon in Iloilo!

Fuel efficient and cost effective: Rapid Acceleration

Unintentional dips in speed and sudden bursts of acceleration to keep pace take a toll on your tank—and your wallet. According to experts, rapid acceleration can consume up to 80ml of fuel. Frequent changes of driving speed can cost you more to 40% more fuel than driving on a steady speed.

The harder you accelerate the more fuel you consume. In the city, you can conserve fuel by easing onto the accelerator pedal gently and gradually. To maximize your fuel efficiency, take five seconds to accelerate your vehicle up to 20 kilometers per hour from a stop.

These problems can be addressed by SafeSat of Satellite GPS Tracking and Asset Management System Corporation. It can monitor adjustments in acceleration and speed for fuel efficiency and cost effectiveness.

Here are some tips from experts: Consider using cruise control for highway driving. Be mindful, however, that little variations in speed can actually be good when gravity does the work. Where traffic patterns permit, allow your speed to drop when you travel uphill, and then regain your momentum as you roll downhill.

Prevention and safety

Vehicular accidents and injury are the number 9 leading causes of death in the world with 1.2 million casualties in 2012 alone. According to World Health Organization Media Center, the statistics has increased the past decade and will spike in the coming years.

For Satellite GPS Tracking and Asset Management System Corporation CEO SALVADOR SILVA Jr. III, this is preventable. He has a first-hand experience of a road mishap with the death of his father. His company has developed an application called SafeSat, a tracking application system that will surely address these increasing accidents and injuries.

SafeSat will be formally launched on June, 28, Saturday, at Executive Room of Hotel del Rio.

Why SafeSat?

On June 28, Saturday, Satellite GPS Tracking and Asset Management System Corporation will formally launch its newest product called SafeSat. A tracking application, it will surely make us safer in this fast-paced world we live in. Among its features are portability because you can track your asset through smart phones; availability because it uses smart phones and telematics device which is custom-designed and created by their company (refer to telematics only); Global Coverage because you can track anyone anywhere in the world; notifications in your hands because you can get alerts and notices for assets’ whereabouts via SMS; real time monitoring because you can track your assets in actual time and with peace of mind; safety because it can detect over-speeding, harsh breaking and acceleration; and 99.9% server up time because it has reliable cloud servers. With this new technology, one can be safe, notified and prevent accidents.

Family tragedy turned into a global opportunity

“My objective is clear:  I want to make an exceptional impact to the community. – Salvador Silva Jr. III, MBA

He believes that what he is now is a product of a family tragedy. The untimely experience of the death of his father opened a lot of questions in his mind. But it also gave him a sense of direction. While he knows that everything is temporary, he can make things happen with urgency. “Indeed, you’ll never know when will be your last moment,” he said with sense of nostalgia.

The tragedy taught SALVADOR SILVA JR. III, MBA, that we could probably change the situation if only safety is standardized and implemented. But then, no one can change history.“Being alive today is a testament that we can do something better for our tomorrow,” he opined with conviction.

Thus, that is the core concept of Satellite GPS Tracking and Asset Management System Corporation, a company he set up. The first-local based GPS-related corporation, it is dedicated in upgrading safety and saving lives.

SALVADOR SILVA JR. III, MBA is the Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Satellite GPS Tracking and Asset Management System Corporation. He is also the CEO and President of Philfast Global Forwarding Inc. and Complete Logistic Control Inc., and CEO and Managing Director of Total SoftTech Solutions Inc.

Buddy, as he is fondly called, is the youngest gregarious child among the seven siblings.  Born from an average family, in his young age he already love community service. His father was the man behind this fondness.

Getting over the enormous heartache of a son over the death of his father due road accident, he came up with an idea to start a business related to global positioning system.

He has never been afraid of trying on different things. After establishing logistics, forwarding and software development companies, he took a relentless drive to realize a company inspired by a tragic event in his life. He promised to never allow another son experience a trauma and heartache of a road accident.

He obtained his executive MBA modular course program at the Central Philippine University in consortium with the ABS-CBN Bayan Academy for Entrepreneurship and the Asian Institute of Management (AIM) in 2010.He started his Masters of Entrepreneurship in the U.S. under Rich Dad Coaching program.

He set up his logistic automated system which eventually opened its doors to a new business of Software Company, and from this, he developed a GPS Tracking and Asset Management Company.

A hardworking man, he is always on the go. “I don’t want to feel comfortable because there’s plenty of world out there for us and you have to keep a close eye on wind conditions to stay focus on your objective,” he enthused.

Indeed, he is a CEO with a purpose!

Satellite GPS Tracking and Asset Management System Corporation zooms to Iloilo

“Every day, we aspire to execute small steps to realize our big dreams and consequently to make the world a little better.”

With this in mind, Satellite GPS Tracking and Asset Management System Corporation, an Ilonggo-based Corporation, was founded. It dares to create an exceptional impact to   community, locally and globally. Organized on August 28, 2012 (under S.E.C. Registration No. CS201226753), the Company, among others, offers Global Positioning System (GPS) tracking and monitoring solutions for all public and private transportation services, asset management of the businesses engaged in hauling, distribution, sales and marketing and mapping revolution, and the incorporation of Geographic Information Systems in Government. It also aims to deliver effective product at an affordable cost.

Behind memories of a son admiring his father that ended in tragic pain, comes the conceptualization of founding Satellite GPS in 2011. He proposed this idea for execution to his Co-founder OJ Garde, a young and enthusiastic software engineer who finds coding to be his passion. Presently, OJ is pursuing his Master’s degree in Business Administration.

Buoyed by the idea that “success is driven by the talent, vision, and leadership capabilities of the team,” in 2012, a high-caliber team for technical department was created.

Angelo Kauffman and Joemar Matulac from a big tech company have a wide experience as a Software Engineer/Application Developers. Both are increasingly involved in the design (high and low) level, implementation and deployment of Java EE and mobile application in various platforms.

The same year, Jovanni Belezza joined the team. He gained his five-year experience and wide technical knowledge and trainings in accounting and audit from one of the top four accounting/auditing firms in the Philippines and widely recognized as the country’s affiliate to one of the big four global auditing firms.

Alfredo Tayo is the Strategic and Financial Adviser. He is gifted with highly successful and colorful profile that involves the world of “government and universal banking” during the last 25 years.

In 2013, the development of product version 1 and 2 was almost done.  This was made possible through efforts of the company’s Technical Team and external Technical Consultant DR. Bobby Gerardo. His skills and capabilities lie in the field of Programming/Teaching using C/C++, Java, Security system, Agent and Middleware, Programming on CORBA, Web Services, Abstract Algebra, Probability and Statistics, Calculus, Differential Equations, Advanced Mathematics, Control and Fuzzy systems, Intelligent systems and mobile communications. Series of functional tests were undergone and the product was made available in the market in small scale as part of external and finalt tests. With the result applauded, the company earned loyal customers for a short period of time.

The core team was set and the product was molded in an intense heat before its grand take off.  In March 2014, it signed the formal engagement with Wong and Berstein Group a Strategic Consulting Group servicing ASEAN organizations related to Strategic Leadership, Growth in Asian Family Businesses, Organizational change and Competitive Strategies. Vice Chairman of the Board of the Company PROF. Enrique Soriano III was its appointed representative at the signing.

The opportunity ahead of the company is vast, but to seize it, it must move faster, focus and continue to transform. Its grand launching on JUNE 28, 2014 will be the day of an honest portrait of its minute steps in making a history.

Seeing the big picture and nailing the details, the company is now ready to imprint a significant story inspired by an Ilonggo!

Benefits of PRIMAX and ECOMAX pavers

There are many benefits inherent for each different type of paver material. Aside from being eco-friendly, PRIMAX and ECOMAX pavers are ideal for walking, jogging and running. The soil cushions these pavers from hard impact on the feet as compared to cemented road.

These pavers come from Unique Tiles Corporation, the only manufacturer of its kind in Panay and in versatile shapes not available with other competitors. The uniqueness of their designs adds touches of style and beauty to any exterior flooring. They are distributed by ZKO Group Distributor, Inc.

Bigger designs are actually cheaper compared to common and smaller designs since lesser number of pieces is required per square meter.

Here are more benefits you get from PRIMAX and ECOMAX pavers:

  1. Durability and Strength. Clay brick pavers have an ability to withstand an extremely high level of loading and are suited to many different types of landscaping applications, such as, pedestrian walkways, vehicle driveway accesses within residential, commercial and municipal construction projects.
  2. Flexible Integrity. They maintain their interlocking form better than poured-in-place-concrete because when the underlying earth and materials move, clay paving adjusts itself to accommodate the movement of the underlying soil and thus prevents cracking of the pavement system.
  3. Long Term Cost Benefits. Clay paving provides an easy repair and recycle solution. If they ever become damaged or stained, it is simply a matter of lifting off the damaged paver and replacing it with a new one. Just like replacing a small piece of a jigsaw puzzle. Therefore, the overall maintenance and replacement cost is significantly lower than other forms of paving materials, such as asphalt.
  4. Non-Slip Surface. They are slip resistant and skid resistant due to their natural textured surface and highly abrasive characteristics. They provide an excellent solution for heavily trafficked wet areas, such as swimming pool pathways and outdoor areas. Municipal bodies use them for highways and pedestrian footpaths.
  5. Fast Installation. Clay paving materials can be laid in any type of moderate weather condition which helps to keep the cost of installation, time management and budgeting issues in check. The installation process is relatively simple, quick and easy, so they are ready to be trafficked upon immediately after the installation process is finalized.
  6. Environmental Responsibility. They are made from a natural clay material from the earth’s soil. It will not lose any of its color or finish over the long term which means that it’s a solid investment that appreciates the value of your property.
  7. Color Integrity. They also maintain their color consistently and permanently throughout the product and will not be affected by any form of ultraviolet light. There are no problems associated with dark colors, shininess or reflective light. The beauty and rich color of clay pavers is an inherent property of clay material – color is NOT added as an artificial dye or pigment during the manufacturing process. Therefore, the integrity of the clay material is maintained and is the main reason why they will never fade over the long term.
  8. Low Maintenance. Cleaning clay pavers is done with some detergent, water and a scrubbing brush. Most of the time they require little maintenance and can be expected to last for generations to come. There are streets in the City of Boston, United States that have been in use for 200 years.

PRIMAX and ECOMAX pavers are eco-friendly!

One of the many advantages of PRIMAX and ECOMAX pavers by ZKO Group Distributors, Inc. is they are eco-friendly. As a matter of fact they are promoted by architects for Green Architecture! Their green advantages also include reduction of storm water runoff and pollution and “island heating” effect in cities, stabilization of soil when used for slopping or steep land, prevention of rut by supporting the weight of traffic and loads, and erosion control.

In a factory, concrete pavers are made by pouring a mixture of concrete and some type of coloring agent into a mold of some shape and allowing to set. They are applied by pouring a standard concrete foundation, spreading sand on top, and then laying the pavers in the desired pattern. No actual adhesive or retaining method is used other than the weight of the paver itself except edging.

Rather than covering your driveway in gravel, asphalt, cement or with blocks (traditional pavers), a “green” driveway uses special “honeycomb” style pavers, with grass growing in the holes. These special blocks are often called Turf or Grass pavers and are hollow blocks used for the construction of permeable pavements. Cells made from recycled plastics are also available and usually allow even more space for grass to grow.

Grass driveways start with a grid-like structure, referred to as a ‘honeycomb’ system. Once this grid is installed, sand or gravel is added inside the grid and then topsoil is added on top. This helps to prevent the turf or grass from settling and allows for some filtration of run-off water.

“Greenify” your walkways, trails, parking lots, golf cart paths, emergency and fire lane access, erosion control and drainage channels with PRIMAX and ECOMAX pavers and be eco-friendly!

ZKO Group Distributors, Inc. paves the way!

When you pass by Aquino Avenue, commonly called Diversion Road, you can see on-going development and constructions on both sides. One can’t help noticing the paved sidewalks.

The red tiles being place like jigsaw puzzle are called pavers. Pavers are paving-stones, tile, brick or brick-like pieces of concrete commonly used as exterior flooring. Pavers can be used to make roads, driveways, patios, walkways and other outdoor platforms.

ZKO Group Distributors Inc. is the distributor of PRIMAX Pavers and Cement Tiles and ECOMAX Pavers here in Iloilo. Its pavers are used on the sidewalks on Aquino Avenue.

PRIMAX is manufactured by Unique Tiles Corporation established 1988 in Sigma Capiz. A family business, it’s the only manufacturer of its kind in Panay. It is the company’s higher brand and quality. Its pavers have smoother surfaces, like the ones used on Iloilo Esplanade. The pavers come in many European designs. These designs are seen on the company’s brochures and are not available with other competitors.

For economical alternatives and commercial use, the company also came up with another brand of pavers – ECOMAX Pavers – with competitive pricing. Commonly seen and used with other competitor, these pavers have rough surface, like the ones used on Aquino Avenue sidewalk project.

PRIMAX Pavers and Cement Tiles, and ECOMAX Pavers are available at A.M. Builders Depot (all branches), Merit Marbles Sales Corporation, House of rocks Enterprises, JB Rock Garden, LMV Natural Stone and Steel, and MJ Stoneworld Builders, Corp.

Traditional vs. Modernity (Part 1)

“Nothing is more so hideous as an obsolete fashion.”Henri B. Stendhal

A fashion show opened the week-long Wedding Rituals 2014 at The Fountain of Robinsons Place Iloilo. It was themed “Irog” as a tribute to Filipiniana.

Fifteen local fashion designers and one Cosmo-Manille haute couturier showcased their varied interpretations of ternos, Maria Clara and baro’t saya giving them modern twists through concepts and materials.

Pristine white, off-white and ecru were the preferred colors but Bad Boy of Iloilo Fashion BO PARCON opted for lavender and JET SALCEDO went for gold while BO CONSTANTINO complemented his with black. The former paired his layered bouffant skirt with shrug and bustier. The latter’s collared coat was matched with a draped skirt that was later revealed to be bias with sweeping train but his ecru headdress was off lined the whiteness of his gown. JET SALCEDO layered his sexy off-shoulder gown with beaded lace giving it a luxurious textured look!

POLI ABASTILLAS embellished his creation with basket weave details. GRACE CLAVEL went for classic terno with appliqués and beadwork details. DAUSON BERMTAY’s gown was be-peplumed with ill-fitting front emphasis while DJOHN CLEMENT’s was collared and belted with ill-fitiing skirt, and PAUL CONTE’s was collared and ruffled.

JOR-EL ESPINA went for 50s Filipiniana belted bouffant with beaded and embroidered details. FRANCO MALAY’s was barong Tagalog-inspired.

The doyens of Iloilo fashion JAKI PEÑALOSA and ANGELETTE BORJA-RAGUS went for the classics but updated the looks with embroidered and beaded details. PEÑALOSA’s was Spanish-inspired and RAGUS’ was Maria Clara-influenced.

MIKE SORILLA’s body-hugging gown was matched with avant-garde shrug and gold beaded laurel details. DODDIE VRIL TAN went for asymmetrical bustier with shrug and sheer beaded skirt. MEL VARCA’s lace off-shoulder and empire-skirt gown was detailed with embroideries and beadwork.

Annual Wedding Rituals is now on its 10th run. Models walked on jazzed up OPMs and folk songs. (To be continued/PN) (Photos by Ray Tabafunda)

Team Media strikes a pose

A Fun Cooking Experience

“God comes to the hungry in the form of food.”Mahatma Gandhi

Yours truly used to watch cooking contests, enjoy good food and even write about them. Recently, yours truly was part of a team that competed at the Cook-Off Challenge at Amigo Mall!

Yours truly joined Philippine Tatler Iloilo correspondent NONOI YBIERNAS and graphic artist/columnist KATHY VILLALON. We called ourselves Team Media!

Restaurateur and gourmand NONOI Y. came up with the dish, grilled coffee-rubbed tenderloin steak with chicken, mixed vegetable and fruit salad in Oriental dressing, and rice and eggs fried in butter, garlic and onion while KATHY V. and yours truly assisted him.

Before the actual cooking of the dishes, Team Media competed with Team Bloggers, led by bubbly and vivacious ANTOINE GREG, in the Food Quiz Bee and Sense-tests (taste, smell and touch).

Après, we got down to the real business of the Cook-Off Challenge. The 30-minute fun cooking experience was highlighted with lots of selfies.

The points we got at the pre-games and the scores the judges gave us for our dish, made us win the Cook-Off Challenge! Team Media received a trophy, medals and cash prizes. Not bad for an afternoon of cooking fun and camaraderie!

The Cook-Off Challenge was a project of TMX, Shops at Amigo and Happy Kitchen.
