Organized by the provincial government to mark the 114th foundation anniversary of the creation of its local government unit on April 15, 1901, Capiztahan has departed from the existing festivals of the province by focusing on the various facets of the cultural heritage of the Capiceños without the other revelry-type of activities.
The province has a joint festival with the city, Sinadya sa Halaran, the premier local cultural and religious festival staged every first week of December and depicts the Capiceñs’ traditions of giving and sharing and devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary.
It has been recognized by the DOT as one of Western Visayas’s major tourism-oriented festivals and has obtained support from the agency.
The epicenter of this festive celebration is, of course, Roxas City, also known as the Seafood Capital of the Philippines.
On the last night of CAPIZtahan 2015, the indefatigable Governor, Hon. VICTOR TANCO and his First and only Lady FATIMA TANCO hosted a dinner party at their family residence with grand dame JUDY ARANETA-ROXAS as special guest. Also there were Miss Universe Philippines 2015 PIA ALONZO WURSTZBACH, Binibining Pilipinas-International 2015 JANICEL LUBINA, Binibining Pilipinas-Intercontinental 2015, CHRISTI LYNN McGARRY, Binibining Pilipinas-Supranational 2015 ROGELIE CATACUTAN and Binibining Pilipinas-Tourism 2015 ANNE LORRAINE COLIS, and top-ranking officials of the province!
As the guests hobnobbed with each other, they enjoyed the good food and fine wine!

Few years ago, yours truly had the honor to be invited by tres charmant Don ADO ESCUDERO to Villa Escudero Plantation Resort for the Holy Week. It is sprawling family-owned estate that boasts of the family ancestral house, museums, waterfalls restaurant, an entertainment pavilion, a coconut restaurant, my host’s Balinese-inspired house, lakeside cottages and more.
The highlight of the visit was the Good Friday procession. In San Pablo City, Laguna where the plantation resort is, the Good Friday is not just a procession on its streets. It is participated by more than 300 images on drawn caros, half of them are owned by the ESCUDERO Family and most are centuries-old! It is also a re-enactment and dramatization of Christ’s Passion.
The piece de resistance of the Good Friday procession is always the more than two century old ESCUDERO Famly-owned Santo Entierro. The ivory image of the dead Christ is encased in wood and glass inlaid in gold and pearl and decorated with ivory cherubims and seraphims and lighted candles!
VIPs watch the procession on covered platforms. Singers DULCE, AIZA SEGUERRA and GARY V. take turns in singing religious songs while a choir performs chants.
Rightfully so, top Ilonggo menswear designer MIKE SORILLA was one of the featured couturiers at “Utopia,” a style event at Kadalag-an Festival of the City of Victorias in Negros Occidental.
With the elements as inspirations of the fashion show, MIKE SORILLA’s Spring/Summer collection was both fiery and flowery. He paired silky linen blazers and taffeta tank tops with slim shorts and tight fit pants, and mixed floral, graphic and geometric prints – all for easy Bohemian, dilettante and free-spirited look! His color palette included neon green, iron blue, mauve, chocolate, oyster and vermillion.
A production of Bacolod-based fashion designer JOHN JOHN DITCHING who was also one of the participants, the style event was directed by eventologist DWIGHT MORANA through the auspices of the City Government of Victorias led by its mayor, Hon. FREDERICK PALANCA.
