Fashion journey

One of the highlights of the weeklong celebration of Panaad Festival 2015 in San Dionisio, Iloilo was the Fashion Festival.

At the invitation of Mayor PETER PAUL and SALLY LOPEZ, four members of Iloilo Young Designers Council presented their latest Spring/Summer collections.

The front acts of comedian GALIXA “Nganga” MISALUCHA and dubstep dancers JEZEL and KLEIN TAPARAN prepared the crowd for the fashion extravaganza at town’s Plaza Mayor.

JET SALCEDO presented two collections. His first collection, called Neon, flashed with vivid colors and Pop Art prints. His signature style was very evident in his next collection, called Jet Black. It showcased cocktail dresses and evening gowns in lace, silk and fringes with expert beading and embroideries.

DODDIE VRIL TAN’s Outcast collection was inspired by day and night glamour. It has subtle colors in shades of earth tones for day, and sensual midnight and classic black for night, embellished with appliqués, beads and laser-cut floral details.

AGNESETTE AUSAN’s Drucklast collection was a play on hard and soft, prints and plains. From everyday wear to evening glamour, the creations were for modern, fashion forward and brave women.

With elements as inspiration, MIKE SORILLA’s pieces were both fiery and flowery. He paired linen blazers and taffeta tanks tops with slim and tight fit pants, and mixed floral, graphic and geometric prints for his dresses – all for easy Bohemian, dilettante and free-spirited look. His color palette included neon green, iron blue, mauve, chocolate, oyster and vermillion.

Food trip

Yours truly never expected my Monday to be a gastronomic treat. Yes, yours truly joined fellow-members of BIG (that’s Bloggers in Iloilo Group) for a food trip!
The food trip jump-started at the opening and blessing of Akiyama Japanese Cuisine at the Shops of Amigo. Owners, Chef YOSHIHISA AKIYAMA and wife KAREN, boasted to their guests that the dishes are authentic and healthy. After all, he and his wife own a restaurant in Japan called Sushi Izakaya. The dishes he prepared were innovative yet traditional. One unique feature of the restaurant was the paper wrapper of the chopsticks — it can be folded ala Origami while waiting for your orders.

The Akiyama Japanese Cuisine experience set the pace for things to come because the next stop was Wild Bamboo Japanes Fastfood at the Foodcourt of SM City Iloilo.
Young owner PAOLO TREÑAS (who is the son of Rep. JERRY TREÑAS of the Lone District of Iloilo City and his wife ROSALIE SARABIA-TREÑAS) treated us to a wide array of bento box, sushi and maki choices. He said his family loves Japanese food, thus, the reason he came up with Wild Bamboo. Aside from being wide-range, the choices are delicious and affordable.

Then the group rushed to Greenwich in Robinsons Place Iloilo for the launch of model/actress YASSMIN ISABEL PRESSMAN as the latest endorser of Greenwich Signature Crispy Thins. There, we enjoyed on Pizza Fries, five flavors of Crispy Thin Pizzas – Meat and Veggies, Hawaiian, All-Meat and Pepperoni and Seven Cheeses, Choco Banana Crisp, and Mango Pearl Cooler! Aside from pizza and lasagna giveaways, we went home with Greenwich Ultimate Greencards. Powered by happyplüs, these cards are used to order dishes from selected Greenwich outlets through calls and the Internet.

From turning Japanese at Akiyama and Wild Bamboo, and going Italian at Greenwich, the food trip screeched to a fun stop with pitchers of Frozen and Fruit-flavored Margaritas at Olé Spanish Tapas Bar and Restaurant on Level 3 of Robinsons Place Iloilo. Coincidentally, it was the owner KYLE ZAFIR’s birthday that night. By the way Olé serves the best Margarita in town!
Needles to say, it was an enjoyable food trip! The next one is coming soon!

Welcome to Mars Jr.’s Safari (Part 2)

For answering the call of the wild, some guests were chosen best dressed: ALAN and PRIMA SWEENEY (Stars of the Night), MARCUS and EVA DUNNEISSEN (Best Dressed Couple), MARK MUYCO and NONOI YBIERNAS (Best Dress Males), and TESS DULALIA and CHONA BONDOC (Best Dressed Females). Rightfully so, they all went home with Gift Certificates from Lighthouse Bar and Resto. The dressed down well-wishers were provided with colorful beaded necklaces at the reception.

The piece de resistance of the night was surprise gift for the celebrator: the comedy act of artiste GISELLE SANCHEZ. She dished out colorful jokes that left everyone in stitches all-night long. She spiced her routine with songs and dances. Needless to say, she brought the house down and left the celebrator and his guests in good mood!
The one-hour act was followed by more “kodakan” and all night dancing! To Tito MARS, yours truly wish him the best in life, happiness, good health and more birthdays. Let’s drink to that! Gesondheid (that’s cheers in Afrikaans)!

Welcome to Mars Jr.’s Safari (Part 1)

It was a wild and fun night when businessman MARS FLORETE Jr. celebrated his 70th birthday with a safari-themed party on the Iloilo River side deck of Lighthouse Bar and Resto. The al fresco bash was well-attended by who’s who in business, society, profession and socio-civic clubs.
His lovely wife SUSAN CAPERONCE-FLORETE and children MARISSA and her husband TRIX GORRICETA, MARJORIE, and son MARS III and his wife BEIA LEGARDA SANTOS-FLORETE were there to welcome the invitees. Youngest daughter CHRISTINE, who jetted in from Cosmo-Manille, made in just time for the celebration.

Aprés the birthday song for the celebrator, everyone partook of the sumptuous dishes at par with the best in town. The bar overflowed with fine wine, scotch whiskey, iced vodka and cold beer!
When not posing for pictures, the guests hobnobbed with each other enjoying the 70s and 80s music of hotshot DJ PAUL OCTAVIO. (To be continued)

Simple yet fun

Tres charmant JUDGEE LOPEZ PEÑA celebrated his birthday with an intimate dinner party at Ocean City Seafood Restaurant. In attendance were the celebrator’s coffee shop mates and biking friends.
His Cosmo Manille-based daughter, Atty. RITA O. PEÑA, jetted in for the occasion. Together with her mom, woman of style SARAH OPOLENCIA-PEÑA, and sister, Dr. RISA O. PEÑA, she welcomed and entertained the guests.
Amid sips and spills of fine wine and ice-cold beer, everyone enjoyed on celestially sumptuous Chinese dishes only the restaurant’s chefs can think of, and juicy conversation on social weather!
To JUDGEE, my best wishes on your birthday! Cheers! (Photos by Ray Tabafunda)

Sheila’s turn

Stylish businesswoman SHEILA DRAPER gathered her closest friends for a simple celebration of her special day at Brewery Gastropub.
Seen on the scene were glam sisters PANGGING and PANE ROSALES, US-based photojournalist PINOY GONZALES, Iloilo’s Bad Boy of Fashion BO PARCON, vivacious VEDETTE ONG, EMMA YTURRALDE and LITTLE ESPINOSA.
The well-wishers enjoyed on a variety of local and imported ice-cold beers, delicious hors d’eourvres, good conversations and the al fresco weather! (Photos by Ray Tabafunda)

Branding Couture

Fashion becomes less a spectator sport when sport itself becomes the fashion!
VERSUS was a catwalk team-up between Iloilo designers and best-selling style brands at The Fountain of Robinsons Place Iloilo.
Co-presented with Robinsons Place Iloilo and Panay News, VERSUS was supported by Toyota Iloilo, Sari-Sari Breadstore, Go Hotel Iloilo, JLK Music Bar and Bijoux Creatives Modeling Agency.
It featured top designers who melded their creations with latest brand collections: BO PARCON with Levi’s, MIKE SORILLA with Nike, and JET SALCEDO with Adidas!

PARCON went preppy by mixing Levi’s denims and khakis jackets, pants and shorts with his black silk linen tailored shirts, sexy bustiers and bouffant skirts.
SORILLA opted for the sporty look by combining his Harlequin pieces with Nike leggings, shorts, shirts and jackets.
SALCEDO picked Punk as theme for his collaboration with Adidas, giving each look a party feel! (Photos by Ray Tabafunda)

Wedded bliss

After two years of romance, GENOVESO “Geno” BEARNEZA and IANNE “Yani” PATRICH SANTIAGO decided to tie the knot with a religious ceremony at Glass Garden in Pasig City. The reception was also held there.
Both acquaintances in UPLB, they met in 2012 in Japan where the groom was studying while the bride was vacationing with her mom. That same year, they became a couple in Manila.
The significant dates of their love story included Oct. 6, 2014, when GENO proposed to YANI in a Ferris Wheel in Tagaytay Sky Ranch; the “pamanhikan on Nov. 15; and the wedding day on Mar. 15, 2015!
They both enjoy traveling, surfing and eating at different restaurants, and love Japanese food and culture.
Raised in Calamba, Laguna, GENO is the son of the late GERARDO B. BEARNEZA and GENOVEVA D. L. S. BEARNEZA while, hailing from Iloilo, YANI is the daughter of retired General LEOCADIO S. C. SANTIAGO Jr. and BOBBIE CHERYL PRIMERO-SANTIAGO.

After party

Smarting from the success of his anniversary show, XX by BO PARCON, Iloilo’s Bad Boy of Fashion treated his models, well-wishers and friends to an after-party at JLK Music Bar. The popular party place famed for its 70s, 80s and 90s music was swinging with fun!
Amid overflowing tequila shots, vodka cocktails and ice-cold beers, and bountiful hors d’oeuvres, everyone had a good jolly time all night- long.
Reminiscence and reenactment of ramp moments and fashion anecdotes were hot topics. There were spiced with hearty and teary laughter.
In between “kodakan” for FB, IG and for this column, there promises of future get-togethers. Needless to say, it was one wonderful night of friendship, togetherness and happiness!
Congratulations, BO PARCON! Yours truly is looking forward to your Silver Anniversary in the fashion industry!

Boracay escapade with Ferra Hotel (Part 2)

It was an exciting afternoon full of fun activities! After all, Ferra Hotel was our “friendly host in Boracay.” Our tour guides were the hotel’s charming officers — DONNA JOAQUIN and RAZEL (who I called RAZEL DAZZLE).
The action-packed fun kicked off with a climb to Mt. Luho, the highest point in the paradise island. On its three-tiered deck, we had a spectacular 360-degree view of the rolling waves, white sand beach, lush hills and luxury resorts down below!
The next stop was the unspoiled Puka Beach on the northwestern part of Boracay. There we enjoyed on plateful of sweet mangoes and ice-cold fruit juices. From the beach, the gang went helmet diving.

Subscribing to the local saying, “You’ve never been to Boracay until you’ve tried Jonah’s Fruit Shakes,” we enjoyed on these fruity concoctions. Mine was spiked with rhum!
The afternoon excitement culminated with sunset sailing! From the sailboat, we experienced the fabled Boracay sunset!
After a short nap, we were ready for the dinner-cocktail party on the hotel’s rooftop bar hosted by GM DANTE C. CRUZ and Chef MINER del MUNDO. The al fresco bash went into crescendo with good food, fine wine and 70s music!

As if not enough, fun-to-be-with RAYMART ESCOPEL and yours truly went barhopping to feel the pulsating island night life. Club Summer Place, Juice Bar, Epic and Club Paraw were on our itinerary.
A good “mornight’s” sleep and a hearty Aklan Longganisa breakfast at Modern Asia Restaurant of Ferra Hotel Boracay got us ready for a trip home!
Oh, well, it one fabulous media trip courtesy of Ferra Hotel Boracay. Until next time!
